Suplasyn injections

Suplasyn is a sterile solution of highly purified sodium hyaluronate (or hyaluronan). It is a normal component of extracellular tissue, including structures like cartilage and synovial fluid. Hyaluronan plays a central role in maintaining the normal physiology of joints and is responsible for the consistency of the synovial fluid in joints.

In osteoarthritis synovial fluid is reduced both in quality and quantity and by injecting Suplasyn into the knee and/or ankle joint it naturally supplements the patient’s synovial fluid and therefore improves pain and reduces stiffness.

The treatment can consist of a single injection or repeated injections (usually 3) which can be given at weekly intervals or when required. Symptoms may subside quickly but the full benefits of the treatment are only seen a few weeks after the treatment’s completion. The majority of patients find an improvement in symptoms for 6-12 months and at such point the treatment can be undertaken again.
